UNC Pembroke is home to the Alpha-Delta-Xi chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, an international history honor society that offers select membership to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. Phi Alpha Theta is dedicated to the professional, educational, and personal development of its members through promoting and providing intellectual and social activities for individuals with a common interest in history.
Phi Alpha Theta Mission Statement
"We are a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We seek to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways."
Requirements for Membership
Undergraduate Students
- Completion of at least twelve (12) hours of history credit (only one course can be an online or transfer course) with a GPA of 3.1 or higher
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Initial membership fee of fifty dollars (lifetime membership in the organization)
- Optional fee of twenty dollars for an honor cord to be worn at graduation.
Graduate Students
- Completion of twelve (12) semester hours towards their Master's Degree
- Completion of approximately 30% of the residence requirements for the Master’s Degree
- Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

Recent/Upcoming Events
- April 6, 2024 — The Department of History at UNCP will be hosting the regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta. Proposals (no more than 250 words) are due by Jan. 31st. More information click HERE.
- March 5, 2022 — Belmont Abbey College will be hosting the 2022 regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta. Proposals (no more than 250 words) are due by February 5. Conference information can be accessed by clicking HERE.
- March-April, 2021 — Francis Marion University hosted the 2021 virtual regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta on April 10. Three UNCP students — Alexis Beryl, Wes Constandse, and Adonis Johnson — presented papers at that conference.
- April 2020 — East Carolina University was to host the 2020 regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta. However, it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.
- April 12-13, 2019 — Winthrop University hosted this year's regional meeting of Phi Alpha Theta. Sydney Oxendine and Samantha Pilkenton represented the UNCP History Department, presenting papers on "The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising" and "Islam as an American Religion."
