  • The UNCP Friends of the Library celebrate the "31st Anniversary" and 2021 Annual FOL Scholarship Ceremony via Zoom, was held on April 21, 2021, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • The UNCP Friends of the Library Presents Playing Sherlock in the Collection Virtual Event, was held on April 7, 2021, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Due to Covid-19, the UNCP Friends of the Library to only one presentation in 2020. UNCP Friends of the Library’s 30th Anniversary and Scholarship Awards Program was presented virtually on April 25, 2020.

  • In Celebration of Native American Heritage Month the UNCP Friends of the Library presents, Made In God’s Image: A Stage Play Reading by Barbara Collins, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 14, 2019, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. This event included a guest panel, discussion, and reception. 

  • A Fall Faculty Author Showcasefeaturing Dr. Jennifer Lowry, Dr. John Labadie, and Margie Labadie, M.F.A., to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on October 15, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

  • A Spring Faculty Showcasefeaturing Dr. Veronica Hardy and Dr. Joe West, to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on April 23, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

  • In Celebrating academic achievements, we will recognize the recipients of our 2019 UNCP Friends of the Library Scholarship Winners and present the UNCP 2018-19 Campus Scholars, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on April 17, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.  

  • LIBRARI-CON was held in the Mary Livermore Library on March 30, 2019, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

  • In Celebrating National Library Week, recognized the recipients of our 2019 UNCP Dean Elinor F. Newberry Poetry/Short Prose Contest, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on April 10, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

  • A Poetry Reading with Dr. Julie Kane, was held in The Museum of the Southeast Indian of Old Main on March 14, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m

  • An African Regalia Showcase, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on February 26, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

  • 30th National African American Read-In (AARI): A Literacy Campaign February 2019. “Speaking Our Words" Recitations of African American Literature was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 19, 2019, at 6:30 p.m.

  • A Spring Faculty Showcasefeaturing Dr. Nicole Stargell and Dr. Ray Sutherland, to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on February 12, 2019, at 3:30 p.m.

  • "Young Native Voices of the Future" program, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 29, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. One of the featured performers will be Calista Deal, Miss Greater Sandhills Outstanding Teen.

  • An American Indian Regalia Showcase, was held in the University Center Annex of the on November 26, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.

  • A Fall Faculty Showcasefeaturing Dr. Robert O. Schneider and Dr. Jeffrey M. Warren, to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 13, 2018, at 3:30 p.m.

  • Mary Livermore Library Enormous Book Sale was held on October 23-25, 2018, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Books were $1.00 each and videos were $2.00 each.

  • 2018 Hispanic Heritage Fall Festival was held on Friday, October 5, 2018, from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. in the UC Annex. This is a free event to all. Please join us for games, music, shows, and food. This is event is sponsored by: Foreign Languages, ETFL Department, OLE, Sigma Delta PI, Acto Latino, Diversity & Inclusion, and UNCP Friends of the Library.

  • In Celebrating National Library Week, we recognized the recipients of our 2018 UNCP Friends of the Library Scholarship and the winners of the 2018 Dean Elinor F. Foster Poetry/Short Prose Contest on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 3:30 p.m. in the Mary Livermore Library’s main reading room. Also at the program we will hold the Raffle drawing for the 50” Flat screen TV.

  • Celebrating Women’s History Month with, Lena Epps Brooker, author of “Hot Dogs on The Road: An American Indian Girl's Reflections on Growing up Brown in a Black and White World.”  This program was held in the Museum of the Southeast American Indian at Old Main, on March 27, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.

  • "Speaking Our Words" Recitations of African American Literature: was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 13, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.

  • The Spring Faculty Showcasefeaturing Dr. Sara Simmons, to discuss her new book, with Letter Writing Contributors: Dr. Valjeaner Ford, Sylvia Averette, and Ashley Allen, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 06, 2017, at 3:30 p.m.

  • "Young Native Voices of the Future" program, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 30, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. One of the featured performers will be Lakota John Locklear, a phenomenal local talent who is internationally recognized and appreciated.

  • An "America without Indians: An Imaginary Journey" program featuring Dr. David La Vere, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 27, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. This project is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a statewide nonprofit and affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

  • An American Indian Regalia Showcase, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on November 14, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.

  • June Power, Access Services/Reference Librarian, presented "Who's Your People?" on Monday, November 9, 2017, at 3:30 PM in the Mary Livermore Library, Room 203. This session covered genealogy basics, important resources for researching Native American ancestries, and useful web sites for finding more information and documenting your family history research. Additionally, the session will provide a demonstration of Ancestry.com, which is available for use in the Library by anyone in the community.

  • An American Indian Storytelling program, featuring Storyteller Kat Littleturtle (Mingo/Cherokee) and Kaya Littleturtle, Drummer & Flautist (Lumbee/Tuscarora), was held at Shining Stars Preschool on November 7, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. This program was co-sponsored by the Mary Livermore Library and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion.

  • 500th Anniversary of the Reformation program,  was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on October 31, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. Guest speakers on the Reformation included Dr. Robert W. Brown (Professor of History), Dr. David Nikkel (Professor of Religion), and Dr. Dennis M. Swanson (Dean of Library Services).
  • A Fall Faculty Showcasefeaturing Mr. Jay Blauser and Dr. John Parnell, to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on October 24, 2017, at 3:30 p.m.

  • Group Book discussion with Dr. Dennis Swanson, featuring "If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?: My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating" by Alan Alda, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on October, 19, 2017, at 3:00 p.m.

  • A Fall Faculty Showcasefeaturing Dr. Andrew Ash and Dr. Roger Guy, to discuss their new books, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library on October 10, 2017, at 3:30 p.m.

  • The Friends of the Mary Livermore Library was sponsoring the Library’s 15th Fundraiser Event on Saturday, September 30, 2017, in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library at 11:30 a.m.  The theme of the event was "Romeos & Juliets - Shakespeare in Pop Culture" by Dr. Richard R. Vela. The program required a Reservation and the price will be $30.00 per person, which could be paid at the door. 
  • "Total Solar Eclipse" Information Program, featuring Dr. Jose D'Arruda, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on August 17, 2017, at 1 p.m.  FREE Eclipse Glasses to the first 100 attendees!!

    • Children's Reading Activity: February 10, 2017 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. R.B. Dean Elementary School; Maxton, NC. UNCP elementary education students, faculty, and staff will read African American children's literature to grads Pre-K through 4th.

    • "Wilmington on Fire" Documentary film about the Wilmington Massacre of 1898 by Chris Everett; was held on February 22, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. in Moore Hall.

    • "Speaking Our Words" Recitations of African American Literature: was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 16, 2017, at 6:30 p.m.

    • "Civil Rights Movement Songs & Stories Concert": February 28, 2017, was at 7:00 p.m. in GPAC.

    Events sponsored by the UNC Pembroke Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Friends of the Library of UNC Pembroke, and the UNC Pembroke School of Education. The Civil Rights Movement Concert is a collaboration with the UNC Pembroke History and Music Departments.

  • The Spring Faculty Showcase, featuring Dr. Motti Inbari and Dr. Clark B. Hanmer, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on January 24, 2017, at 3:30 p.m.
  • In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Mary Livermore Library presented a panel discussion about the newly published book, American Indian Women of Proud Nations: Essays on History, Language, and Education. This publication highlights Southeastern Indian issues and demonstrates the unique situation of women in tribes lacking (full) federal recognition. Two of the co-editors are UNCP colleagues. Dr. Cherry Maynor Beasley is the Belk Endowed Chair in Rural and Minority Health, the Department of Nursing, and Dr. Mary Ann Jacobs isAssociate Professor and Chair, American Indian Studies and Social Work. The third co-editor, Dr. Ulrike Wiethaus,is Professor of Religion and American Ethnic Studies at Wake Forest University. Two of the chapter authors, Dr. Jane Haladay, Associate Professor (American Indian Studies), and Dr. Olivia Oxendine,Associate Professor (School of Education), will also be panel discussants. Topics of discussion during the program will range from American Indian women’s experiences of historical trauma to their ongoing efforts at preserving and rebuilding their Native nations. The panel discussion took place in the Library on November 17 at 6:30 p.m.

  • The Faculty Showcase was on September 20, 2016, at 3:30 p.m, in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library. The event featured Dr. Teagan E. Decker, Associate Professor in the English, Theatre and Foreign Languages Department & Assistant Dean of the Esther G. Maynor Honors College, and Dr. Thomas Heffernan, Lecturer in the English, Theatre and Foreign Languages Department.

  • (RESCHEDULED) The Friends of the Mary Livermore Library will be sponsoring the Library’s 15th Annual Benefit on Friday, April 29, 2016.  The theme of this year’s event is Exploring Harper Lee: The Dichotomy of Atticus Finch.”  The evening will focus on the surprising publication of Harper Lee’s new novel, Go Set a Watchman and the inevitable, somewhat spirited comparison to her revered, Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird.  Activities will begin in the Mary Livermore Library where benefit participants will be treated to a reception, a delicious buffet dinner, and a presentation on Go Set a Watchman by Dr. Wendy Pearce Miller, Chair of the English, Theatre & Foreign Languages Department at UNCP After dinner and Dr. Miller’s presentation, everyone will then proceed to the Moore Hall Auditorium to enjoy a screening of To Kill a Mockingbird.  It promises to be a lively and thought-provoking evening.

  • The Spring Faculty Showcase, featuring Dr. Ryan Anderson and Dr. Charles Beem, was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 23, 2016, at 3:30 p.m.

  • In celebration of the 27th National African American Read-In (AARI), a program entitled “Speaking Our Words: Recitations of African American Literature” was held in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library, on February 25, 2016, at 6:30 p.m.
  • An African American Read-In (AARI) program entitled “The Children’s Hour” was be held on February 26, 2016 (8:30-11:00 a.m.) at R. B. Dean Elementary School, Maxton, NC. UNCP students, faculty and staff read African American children’s literature to grades Pre-K through 4th.

 The goal of AARI is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. During the UNCP program, students, faculty and staff, and community members will be reciting works by African American authors.

  • The Fall Faculty Showcase, featured Dr. Jay Hansford C. Vest, was held on November 17, 2015, at 3:30 p.m.

  • November 13, 2015: 6th Annual Native American Read-In: A Literacy Campaign. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month 2015, UNCP students, faculty and staff read in local schools each semester. This November to honor Native American Heritage Month, we visited Pembroke Elementary School on Friday, November 13, 2015. Some of the students are planning activities to accompany their reading selections. 

  • The Fall Faculty Showcase, featured Dr. Rita Hagevik and Dr. David Zeigler, was held on September 29, 2015, at 3:30 p.m.

  • The Friends of the Mary Livermore Library sponsored the Library’s 14th Annual Benefit on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 6:00 p.m. The theme of the event was A Novel Experience with the Library: F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.” For the occasion, the Friends of the Library are partnering with the Givens Performing Arts Center (GPAC). The evening will begin in the University Center Annex where benefit participants will be treated to a delicious buffet dinner and a presentation by UNCP historian, Dr. Ryan Anderson, on the “Roaring Twenties” – the era in which the novel takes place.  There will also be a meet-and-greet with cast of the Montana Repertory Theatre. Everyone will then proceed to GPAC to enjoy a performance of The Great Gatsby.

  • The National Library Week Program & Reception was held on April 15, 2015 at 3:30 p.m. The program showcased the Poetry/Short Prose Contest Winners, the 2015 Friends of the Library Scholarship Winners, and the UNCP 2014-15 Campus Scholars.

  • An African American Read-In program entitled Keynote Adress: Featuring Rev. Pia Jessup was held on March 24, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. The 2015 African American Read-In programs are sponsored by the UNC Pembroke Office for Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) and the Friends of the Library of UNC Pembroke (FOL).
  • An African American Read-In program entitled \"Speaking Our Words\" Recitations of African American Literature was held on March 9, 2015, at 6:30 p.m.
  • North Carolininas Meet Sherman's March, featured Guest Speaker Dr. Jaqueline Glass Campbell, of Francis Marion University. Event was held on October 28, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. This program is sponsored by UNCP Department of History and co-sponsored by Academic Affairs, The Mary Livermore Library, and the Friends of the Library.
  • The Fall Faculty Showcase, featured Dr. Mohammad Ashraf and Dr. John E. Spillan, was held on October 28, 2014, at 3:30 p.m.
  • The National Library Week Program & Reception was held on April 16, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. The program showcased the Poetry/Short Prose Contest Winners, the 2014 Friends of the Library Scholarship Winners, and the UNCP 2013-14 Campus Scholars.
  • A combination Women’s History Month/Civil War 150 program was held on March 25, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. The speaker was Dr. Mary Wayne Watson.
  • The Spring Faculty Showcase, featuring Dr. Jaime Martinez and Dr. Robert O. Schneider, was held on March 18, 2014, at 3:30 p.m.
  • The Library’s Annual Fundraising Benefit was held on Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Chancellor’s residence. The speaker was Dr. Elliot Engel.
  • An African American Read-In program entitled “A Celebration in Song” was held on Feb. 26, 2014 (7:00 p.m.) at GPAC. It featured the 100 Men in Black Male Chorus, Inc. An independent, “community-based,” male chorus that is representative of all age groups, ethnicities and walks of life who love to sing and share the “good news of the gospel” through music.
  • An African American Read-In program entitled “‘Speaking Our Words’ Recitations of African American Literature” was held on Feb. 25, 2014 (6:30 p.m.) in the Mary Livermore Library, Main Reading Room. UNCP students and special guests, including Miss North Carolina 2013, Johna Alexandria Edmonds, and N. C. Poet Extraordinaire, Trin-A-Thoughtz, recited favorite poems, passages, and excerpts from African American literature.
  • An African American Read-In program entitled “The Children’s Hour” was held on Feb. 20, 2014 (8:30-10:30 a.m.) at R. B. Dean Elementary School, Maxton, NC. UNCP students, faculty and staff read African American children’s literature to grades Pre-K through 4th.
  • October 30, 2013: A Fall Faculty Showcase featuring: Dr. Catherine Parisian and Dr. Melissa Schaub discussing their new books. 3:30 p.m.
  • November 11, 2013: Carolina Indians and the American Civil War. A panel discussion featuring Brooke Bauer (Catawba), Jefferson Currie (Lumbee), Martin Richardson (Haliwa-Saponi). Introduction by Dr. Rose Stremlau and moderated by Dr. Linda Oxendine.
  • November 14, 2013: 4th Annual Native American Read-In: A Literacy Campaign. In celebration of Native American Heritage Month 2013, 18 Elementary education majors, 1 Special Education major, and 12 UNCP Faculty & Staff will read to all of the students at Pembroke Elementary School.

  • On Friday, April 16th, 2010 The Friends of the Library present their annual benefit featuring John Shelton Reed, co-author of Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue.
  • The Friends of the Library present \"A Fall Faculty Showcase\" featuring UNCP faculty introducing their new books and DVD on September 10, 2008 in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library. Speaking are Dr. David Oxendine on Perceived Fairness of  An Ethnic Validation Procedure: Implications for Lumbee Federal Recognition, and Dr. Youngsuk Chae on Politicizing Asian American Literature: towards a Critical Multiculturalism . Remarks by faculty will begin at 10:15 a.m. and will be followed by a reception.
  • The Friends of the Library will present a second “Fall Faculty Showcase” on October 15, 2008.  Presenting will be Dr. Stan Knick introducing Listen to the Drum: A Closer Look at American Indian Powwow Music and Our people: Occaneechi Band of Saponi Nation, and Dr. Rick Crandall discussing New Methods of Competing in the Global Marketplace: Critical Success Factors from Service and Manufacturing.  Remarks by faculty will begin at 10:15 a.m. and will be followed by a reception.
  • On September 30, Rob Christensen will discuss The Paradox of Tar Heel Politics: The Personalities, Elections, and Events that Shaped Modern North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library. A reception and book signing will follow.
  • On October 28, Joanna Catherine Scott will discuss The Road from Chapel Hill in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library at 7:00 p.m.  A reception and book signing opportunity will follow.
  • On February 3, 2009, Spring Council, daughter of Mamma Dip (Mildred Council) will be discussing her mother’s books, Mamma Dip’s Family Cookbook and Mamma Dip’s Kitchen.  The discussion will take place in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library at 7:00 p.m. A reception and book signing opportunity will follow.
  • On April 17, 2009, The Friends of the Library of UNC Pembroke will host the eighth Annual Friends of the Library Benefit Event.  “Southern Humor @ the Library” will feature author Celia Rivenbark.  Ms. Rivenbark has written such books as: Stop Dressing Your Six Year Old Like a Skank, and Bless your Heart, Tramp: and Other Southern Endearments.
  • On Friday, April 11th The Friends of the Library presented for their annual benefit \"A North Carolina Evening @ the Library\" featuring Bill Thompson, author of Sweet Tea, Fried Chicken and Lazy Dogs: Reflections on North Carolina Life.
  • The Friends of the Library present \"A Spring Faculty Showcase\" featured UNCP faculty introducing their new books on March 12, 2008 in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library. Speaking were Dr. Scott Billingsley on It's a New Day: Race and Gender in the Modern Charismatic Movement; Dr. Edwin \"Cliff\" Mensah on Economics of Technology Adoption: A Simple Approach; and Dr. Jeff Frederick on Stand Up for Alabama: Governor George Wallace. Remarks by faculty were followed by a reception.
  • On February 19, 2008, Melton McLaurin discussed The Marines of Montford Point: America's First Black Marines in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library. A reception and book signing opportunity followed.
  • The Friends of the Library sponsored \"A Spring Faculty Showcase\" featuring UNCP faculty discussing their new books on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in the Main Reading Room of the Mary Livermore Library. Speaking were Dr. Roger Guy on From Diversity to Unity: Southern and Appalachian Migrants in Uptown Chicago, 1945-1970; Dr. Peter Imoro on Cultura e Ideologia en Cuatro Novelas de Manuel Puig; and Dr. Robert Sessengood on Competing Identities: the Athlete and the Gladiator in Early Christianity. Remarks by faculty were followed by a reception.
  • On February 4, 2008, the Friends of the Library, in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs and the Center for Leadership and Service's First Book, co-hosted the 19th National African American Read-In: A Literacy Campaign. The schedule of events included Children's Hour, Book Discussion: Come on People: On the Path from Victims to Victors, and Oral Readings of African American Literature. In celebration of Black History Month, individuals from the University and community read excerpts from African American-authored literature.
  • On October 23rd, Mike Lassiter discussed Our Vanishing Americana at 7:00 p.m. in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library. A reception and book signing followed.
  • On September 25th, Nina Marie Martinez discussed her latest book Caramba at 7:00 p.m. in the main reading room of the Mary Livermore Library. A reception and book signing followed.
  • The UNCP Friends of the Library celebrated its sixth Library Annual Benefit with Cecilia Budd Grimes, author of What It Means To Be Southern, on Friday, April 13, 2007.
  • The Friends of the Library and the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs presented Dr. Tim Tyson, author of Blood Done Sign My Name, Thursday, February 22nd in the Sampson-Livermore Library. Appearing with him was gospel singer Mary D. Williams, who sang some spirituals, including the one for which Dr. Tyson's book is named.
  • Lisa Huggins Oxendine, author of The Pink Begonia Sisters' Caribbean Retreat, discussed her book at the Robeson County Public Library on January 25.
  • Emyl Jenkins Sexton, author of books on American traditions, Southern hospitality, appraising antiques, and the recent mystery novel Stealing With Style, presented a program on Southern Christmas traditions November 28 in the Sampson-Livermore Library.
  • Dr. Fran Fuller and Dr. Liliana Wendorff, UNCP faculty authors, discussed their respective new books, Beyond the Voice of Reason and Camacho C'est Moi, at the Sampson-Livermore Library on October 18.
