July 27, 1946 – October 22, 2016
The Library lost a major benefactor and loyal supporter with the passing of Mr. Bill Hunt, Jr. Mr. Bill was the son of the late Elmer William Hunt, a local photographer who graduated from the University in 1953 when it was Pembroke State College and who served as the University’s photographer from 1953 to 1973.
In 2002, Mr. Bill donated his father’s extensive collection of negatives to UNCP. The original Elmer W. Hunt Photograph Collection contained over 53,000+ negatives that pictorially document the history and heritage of an entire community during a 30-year period from the 1950s through the 1980s.
The University, the Library, and the community owe a large debt of gratitude to Mr. Bill for his generous donation.
Available Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; or by appointment. The Special Collections/Archives Collection is a repository for the published and unpublished records of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (previously known as Croatan Normal School, Indian Normal School of Robeson County, Cherokee Indian Normal School, Pembroke State College for Indians, Pembroke State College, and Pembroke State University). Special Collections/Archives houses materials which require special handling and preservation. While many of the items in the collections are unique and valuable historical resources, patrons are encouraged to use these materials in their research. The physical items in the collections are to be used only in the Library; however, many of the materials are available online, via the library’s digital collections.
Special Collections staff is available to assist patrons in finding materials to further their research.
